Hit up those sales!!

What sales you’re asking??

The answer: those WONDERFUL after Halloween sales! They mark candy down 50% or more!!

Now many people… including myself…. are thinking… “WHY would I want to stock up on candy?!”

For Food Storage silly!! :)

Did you ever think to put candy in your food storage?? It’s a very important item!

Reasons to keep candy in your food storage and 72 hour kits:

* it will give you much needed sugar in an emergency
* it is pocket sized and therefore easy to grab and store!
* candy is something your kids are almost guaranteed to eat!

While most women may want to head for the chocolate section (me included!) The best candies to keep in your storage are hard candies. Chocolate melts and doesn’t keep for very long. Hard candies can last in your storage for up to 10 years… that is if your kids or husbands don’t find them first! :)

Good ideas for food storage candies:

* starburst
* butterscotch or cinnamon disks
* root beer barrels
* starlight mints
* smarties
* tootsie rolls
* lollipops
* jolly ranchers
* etc, etc, etc….

I keep large bags of hard candies in my food storage bins and then a small Ziploc bag full of candies in each 72 hour kit.

This is a fun week to spend your allotted amount… HAVE FUN!! :)

FHE Service Project–

Purpose:A Family Home Evening Service Project lesson on helping those who are in need. This lesson is about helping others find warmth in the cold winter months and at the same time, have the family members (or ward) feel the warmth of serving our fellow man.

Hymn: “Have I Done Any Good”

Scripture: Jacob 2:19

Lesson:

There is something about this time of year— the fast approaching holiday season, that tends to motivate people to do more service. Serving others is one of the teachings our Savior, Jesus Christ, taught constantly by his example.

Service others helps us become better people. There are lessons and feelings we learn and experience from service that cannot be duplicated any other way.

Here are some great thoughts about service:

“Service changes people. It refines, purifies, gives a finer perspective, and brings out the best in each one of us. It gets us looking outward instead of inward. It prompts us to consider others’ needs ahead of our own. Righteous service is the expression of true charity, such as the Savior showed.

“Service helps us establish a righteous tradition. This is so necessary, particularly among young people. Wise parents will provide service opportunities in the home for their children from an early age. Growing up with this tradition will blossom into community service and Church service. It will develop a spirit of volunteerism in a world where people more often ask, “What’s in it for me?” The Lord has counseled: “For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; …

“Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness.” (D&C 58:26–27.)

Excertps from: “The Spirituality of Service” by Elder Derek A. Cuthbert, formerly Of the Seventy

Service Project Activity:

Talk with family, friends, neighbors and even merchants and seek donations of jackets and coats to donate to local shelters, needy families or even police or fire stations who may be able to use them to take on calls. Search those closets, storage units and so forth for possible donations of items. (Be sure to contact shelters and police/fire stations to find out their needs and let them know of the donation you’re looking to make and if they’re currently accepting donations)

You can even make this a Young Men, Young Women, Relief Society, Elder’s Quorum or an entire ward service project.

VINEGAR!!!
Now this week is a bit different because we are adding supplies to our storage that are for more than eating!

Vinegar can be used for cooking, preserving and CLEANING!! I think I use it more to clean than to cook! I pour 1 cup of vinegar down each of my household drains with 1/2 cup baking soda once a week to freshen them and keep them clear of build up.

I use vinegar in my dishwasher as a rinse agent instead of Jet Dry or other similar products.

White vinegar is a great fabric softener! I use a cup in the fabric softener dispenser with each load of laundry. It’s also great for whitening whites and getting underlying “odors” out!

So this week stock up of the following:

White vinegar
Cider Vinegar
Towels and Washcloths

This is the time of year where I go through all my linens. Any washclothes or towels that are worn, stained, etc. move into my storage stash! I also use these towels, washclothes, etc for camping! So this camping bin is kept with my food storage.

Do you have any tips to share about vinegar use? PLEASE SHARE!! :)

Power Prayers

Attention activity :

Prayer Puzzles

Cut out all of the pieces and put the puzzles together. For bigger kids, mix up all the pieces of the different puzzles. For younger children, do each puzzle separately.

What do all these pictures have in common?
Answer: The people are all praying.

*all artwork from the Prayer Puzzles came from the lesson manual “Behold Your Little Ones”

Song: “A Child’s Prayer”

Scripture: Doc & Cov 112:10

Lesson/Discussion:

Prayer is a gift from Heavenly Father. It is our way of communicating with Him.
What are some things we might talk about in our prayers each day?
Our prayers become Power Prayers when we express the feelings of our hearts with sincerity.

Quote:

Gordon B. Hinckley has said, “The trouble with most of our prayers is that we give them as if we were picking up the telephone and ordering groceries–we place our order and hang up. We need to meditate, contemplate, think of what we are praying about and for and then speak to the Lord as one man speaketh to another. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord.” (Isaiah 1:18). That is the invitation. Believe in the power of prayer–it is real, it is wonderful, it is tremendous.”

How can we turn our prayers into Power Prayers?

Suggestions from the Friend, March 2008:

How can I improve my prayers?

Activity:
Prayer List

Fill out the Prayer List together thinking about those things that are important in your life. Think about things and people you want to remember to pray about and for.

Weekly Challenge:

*Place your personal prayer list on or by your bed. Look at it and ponder it before you say your prayers. Remember to include those important things in your prayers each morning and night. Add to your list as you think of additional things you can pray about.

*You may also wish to try and pray out loud this week. When we pray vocally, we think more about the words we use and our prayers tend to be more thoughtful.
*Don’t forget that you can pray any time and any place, whenever you have need

Cooler weather brings on a hankering for SOUP! Week #3

And that is what our weekly item is!!… SOUP
This week use your allotted food storage amount to stock up on:
Canned Soups
Bouillon
Broth

and DO NOT forget a MANUAL can opener!
(You can’t eat your soup if you can’t open it! I bought one at the dollar store)

Remember the #1 rule: STAY IN BUDGET!! Make sure to check out grocery outlet stores and weekly deals at local stores. Case sales are happening right now all over the country!
When I stock up on soups I buy equal amounts of “eating” soups and “cooking” soups.

Eating soups for us are things like: minestrone, chicken noodle, italian wedding, chowder, etc These are soups that you would crack the can open and eat right up!

Cooking soups are: cream of mushroom, tomato, cream of celery, cream of chicken, etc. These are soups that you would add to a recipe to make a full meal. (Or could be eaten alone)

Now our favorite fall soup doesn’t come in a can, box or bag. So we use veggies that we’ve frozen for food storage and broth from our stash to make this amazing tummy warming soup!!
Butternut Squash Apple Soup

1 large butternut squash (4-5 lbs) peeled, seeded and cut into 2in. chunks
4 apples (jonagold are best) peeled, cored and cut into 2in. chunks
24 oz. vegetable broth
1 tbsp. rosemary
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter
1 pint of half and half (Can use powdered milk mixed to half/half consistancy)
Salt and Pepper

Put squash, apples, rosemary and broth into stock pot over medium-high heat. Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes. (Until squash is extremely tender)
Use hand blender puree squash mixture or move mixture to blender in batches.
Heat puree to simmering and add stick of butter. Once butter is melted slowly stir in half and half. Bring to a simmer. DO NOT BOIL!
Add salt and pepper to taste.

The soup is a favorite of ours! It’s excellent served with a nice baguette and salad or as an accompaniment to a larger meal.

ENJOY!
